Clay Center / Clay Co.

Clay Center, the county seat of Clay County, was founded in 1857 and named for the Kentucky statesman Henry Clay. Today it has a population of 4,564 and is often referred to as the "Best kept secret in the Midwest".

Clay County was settled in north-central Kansas by sturdy farmers who were drawn to the area's fertile soil, picturesque Republican River Valley and numerous creeks and streams. Agriculture remains a primary industry here, but numerous industries and a thriving retail sector are also part of the area's makeup.

Clay County lies on the edge of the Junction City, Manhattan, Fort Riley corridor, which is currently one of the fastest growing regions in the state. This central location is close to Tuttle Creek Lake, Milford Reservoir and the Steve Lloyd Wetlands, all within a few minutes drive.

Clay Center offers several annual celebrations, among them is the Piotique Festival (pie-o-teek: combining the words "pioneer" and "antique") which features a parade, arts & craft vendors, a kiddie parade, Old Car Nuts vintage car display, live entertainment, and other activities the last Saturday in September. Other events include an Easter egg hunt, citywide garage sale, sidewalk sale, Independence Day Celebration, Halloween Howl and costume contest, and Christmas promotion activities which include Santa flying in from the north pole and greeting children at Santa's Workshop located on the courthouse square.

For recreation, Clay Center has five parks with picnic areas, a zoo, an outdoor swimming pool, bowling alley, six lighted tennis courts, a nine-hole country club golf course and a nine-hole public golf course, and eight ball diamonds. Two free RV parks are also located in Clay Center.
