Fair Housing Information

The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination by direct providers of housing, such as landlords and real estate companies as well as other entities such as municipalities, banks and other lending institutions, and homeowners insurance companies whose discriminatory practices make housing unavailable to persons because of disability, familial status, national origin, race or color, religion, or sex.

National Fair Housing Month

Each April, the City of Manhattan, the state of Kansas, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) observe National Fair Housing Month. National Fair Housing Month celebrates the passage of the Fair Housing Act in April 1968, a national law that prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing or any other housing-related activities based on race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disabilities, and families with children. National Fair Housing Month increases efforts to end housing discrimination and raises awareness of fair housing rights and responsibilities. The City of Manhattan believes that education regarding the rights and responsibilities of all participants in the Fair Housing equation supports a positive experience for both housing providers and consumers.
